Authorities in Ilocos Norte have arrested 13 individuals for violating the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) gun ban, which took effect ahead of the May 12, 2025, national and local elections.

The Ilocos Norte Police Provincial Office (INPPO) presented over 1,400 confiscated firearms in a press conference on March 24.

Of these, 31 were voluntarily surrendered by candidates, while 10 came from government officials, and 21 were turned in by supporters and campaign leaders.

Since October, authorities have seized 12 firearms, leading to the arrest of 13 individuals for either lacking the necessary permits or directly violating the gun ban.

INPPO Provincial Director Colonel Frederick Obar acknowledged the cooperation of political candidates and the public in ensuring a peaceful election. “Some of these firearms came from very cooperative candidates, while others were surrendered for safekeeping, including improvised firearms,” Obar said.

Ilocos Norte has previously been flagged as an election area of concern, with the municipalities of Pagudpud, Solsona, Pasuquin, Badoc, and Laoag City placed under watch during the 2022 presidential elections.

Obar emphasized the importance of collaboration between the police, candidates, and civilians in maintaining peace and order.

Under COMELEC Resolution No. 11067, carrying firearms, explosives, or any deadly weapons without proper authorization is strictly prohibited.

Violators face imprisonment of one to six years, loss of the right to hold public office, and disqualification from voting.
