BREAKING NEWS!

13 FAMILIES IN ITOGON, BENGUET, EVACUATED DUE TO A LANDSLIDE

At the height of Typhoon Nika’s onslaught, a part of this mountain in Sitio Camp 3, Acupan in Barangay Virac, Itogon, Benguet, collapsed around eleven o’clock in the evening on Monday, November 11.

The continuous heavy rains brought by the typhoon caused it.

With the improved weather, efforts are now underway to create a new water channel in the river to prevent further landslides, especially as Typhoon Ofel threatens to affect Northern Luzon.

However, due to the distance and narrow road leading to the area, loaders and backhoes can’t reach the location, so others are manually clearing the landslide debris.

Thirteen families, or 47 individuals, living near the landslide area were already evacuated.

No injuries or casualties were reported from the landslide.

There are concerns that further rainfall might completely collapse this part of the mountain, burying nearby houses.

According to the DOST PAGASA Baguio Synoptic Station, Typhoon Nika dumped 116.6 millimeters of rain on Baguio City and its nearby towns within just two days of its onslaught.

This year, it’s the first landslide incident in the town caused by nonstop rains from a typhoon, according to the MDRRMO.
