Amid ongoing discussions on food security nationwide, a new report from the Philippine Statistics Authority–Cordillera (PSA–CAR) reveals that 13 out of every 1,000 individuals in the region are considered food poor, or those who lack sufficient resources to access adequate food.
Construction worker “John,” who earns P2,750 weekly, said a significant portion of his income goes to food expenses. “I hope prices go down so we can have a better life,” he said.
According to PSA-CAR Chief Statistician Aldrin Bahit Jr., those classified as food poor cannot afford meals that meet their nutritional needs, especially given their economic activities.
The report pointed to inflation as a key factor exacerbating the issue.
While the province with the highest number of food-poor individuals was not specified in the release, the Department of Agriculture (DA) assured that there is no food shortage in the country.
“We have most of what we need, especially from April to June,” said Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel.
The Palace also reiterated its commitment to support vulnerable sectors, citing initiatives like the “Kadiwa ng Pangulo” and “Rice for All” programs.
“As long as the government is capable, we will not stop helping our vulnerable citizens,” said Usec. Claire Castro.
