BREAKING NEWS!

2 MILLION FILIPINOS, VICTIMS OF FOOD POISONING EVERY YEAR, ACCORDING TO THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION

Every year, an estimated 600 million people around the world fall victim to food poisoning, according to the World Health Organization.

Two million of these are Filipinos.

Moreover, 420,000 people die due to it.

As Christmas approaches and with numerous celebrations ahead, leftovers often accumulate, and sometimes they spoil if neglected.

So, as a precaution, did you know that this October, we are celebrating Food Safety Awareness Week?

This has been celebrated since 1999, through Presidential Proclamation No. 160, signed by former President Joseph Estrada.

Its aim is to raise public awareness about food safety to prevent food poisoning and the spread of foodborne illnesses.

Food poisoning can come from contaminated or spoiled food, improper preparation, or undercooked meals.

Some symptoms of food poisoning include vomiting, stomach pain, and weakness.

Many people also suffer from what is called “foodborne illness,” such as the Salmonella case in the Philippines from 2022 to 2023.

Because of this, the Department of Health (DOH), together with the Department of Agriculture (DA), has programs aimed at educating the public about proper food preparation.

One of these is the Food Safety Training for establishments.

They also have food safety campaigns that spread information about effective cooking methods and maintaining food cleanliness.

Therefore, we shouldn’t just focus on the cleanliness of our surroundings; we should also consider the safety of everyone who consumes the food we prepare.
