Bones are one of the most important structures supporting our body.
That’s why, as we age, we sometimes notice that our bones weaken or become brittle.
This week, did you know that we are celebrating Bone and Joint Awareness Week?
This celebration began in 2002 under Proclamation No. 658, observed every third week of October.
It is led by the Department of Health (DOH) along with other organizations that promote awareness about bone and joint diseases.
This serves as a platform to promote health programs, especially since many of our countrymen experience bone and joint problems.
According to data from the National Health Institute, around 200 million people worldwide are suffering from osteoporosis.
In the Philippines, around 4 million Filipinos are affected, and 80% of them are women aged 65 and above, according to the DOH.
4.2 million Filipinos also suffer from arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, which can cause severe pain.
These conditions can also limit activities, especially heavy tasks.
Those who experience these may also suffer from anxiety and depression, which are both important aspects of our health.
That’s why, in this celebration, the Department of Health offers various programs.
One of them is free consultation and screening for people suffering from bone diseases.
Let’s remember that health is our wealth, so while it’s early and you’re feeling something, immediately consult a doctor.
