A vacation trip turned tragic for a group of tourists after the van they were riding fell into a 50-meter deep ravine in Barangay Poblacion, Sadanga, Mountain Province, on the evening of April 4.
The accident claimed five lives and left nine others injured.
The group was reportedly heading to Buscalan, Kalinga to visit traditional tattoo artist Whang-od when the accident occurred.
According to Sadanga Police Chief, Capt. Nestor Puguon, the van was moving at a high speed when it hit a gutter and veered off the road, plunging into the ravine. “There was a curve before the gutter, but the driver failed to make the turn,” he said.
Five passengers, including the driver—three men and two women—died from severe head injuries.
The nine others were rushed to a hospital for treatment. One of them has already been discharged.
The accident site has been tagged as an accident-prone area.
Authorities are now planning to install early warning devices to prevent similar incidents in the future.
