75% OF AVOCADO’S FAT IS HEART-FRIENDLY

BY: VALERIE ANN DISMAYA

During the month of May, local markets brim with fresh avocados, signaling the peak of harvest season.

But beyond its soft texture and rich taste, avocado offers surprising health benefits that many may not know about.

The fruit is packed with unsaturated fat, commonly known as “good fat.”

This type of fat not only supports heart health but can also help lower cholesterol levels.

Studies show that over 75% of the fat content in avocados is unsaturated, with most of it being monounsaturated fat, which is linked to reduced risk of heart disease.

Avocados are also rich in other essential nutrients such as potassium, fiber, vitamin E, and vitamin C.

But why does avocado have this kind of fat?

It’s because the avocado tree, native to Central America and Mexico, stores energy in its fruit in the form of fat.

This stored fat fuels seed growth, while also delivering an ideal combination of calories and nutrients to people.

Avocados contain antioxidants too, which may help fight inflammation in the body.

Research from institutions like the American Heart Association and Harvard School of Public Health backs these health claims.

One of the most recent studies even suggests that regularly eating avocados may help lower both cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

As more Filipinos become health-conscious, avocado-based diets and recipes are gaining popularity.

Products such as avocado oil, spreads, and smoothies are now common, reflecting rising public awareness of the fruit’s nutritional value.

Looking for a healthy alternative to butter or margarine?

Avocado is an affordable, delicious, and heart-friendly option.
