A 9-year-old boy died while seven other children sustained injuries after an Asian Utility Vehicle (AUV) lost control and crashed into them while they were playing along the roadside in Barangay Bonuan Gueset.
The accident happened around 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, along Dupax Street. According to an initial investigation by the Dagupan City Police, the AUV swerved to avoid a pedestrian and an oncoming cyclist. However, the driver lost control of the vehicle.
“When he tried to regain control of the steering wheel and return the car to the road, he was unable to do so. That’s when the vehicle crashed straight into the wall,” said Police Lieutenant Colonel Brendon Palisoc, chief of the Dagupan City Police.
Unfortunately, the AUV veered toward the side of the road, hitting eight children who were playing in the area. The 9-year-old boy suffered severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his wounds. The seven other children sustained minor injuries, including bruises and fractures, and are now recovering.
The 54-year-old driver of the AUV is currently in police custody and is facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple physical injuries.
