Abra lawmaker censures La Union colleague for uncalled remarks

Abra representative JB Bernos

BAGUIO CITY (July 25, 2021)— Abra lawmaker Joseph “JB” Bernos took exception, in behalf of his provincemates, a recent statement by La Union 2nd district rep. Sandra Eriguel alluding there is continued politics-fueled violence in his province.

“If that is the situation of her province, as she feels it, she shouldn’t be comparing it to any other as similarly situated like hers, because it is totally untrue and wrong,” Rep. Bernos laments.

Bernos insists Abra has left its dark past of intense political rivalries marked with violence wrought by private armed groups linked to politicians.

Eriguel earlier sought national government attention after a supposed slay plot against her and two other political figures in La Union by a gun-for-hire group led by a dismissed police Colonel. The group is reportedly composed of rouge military and police scalawags, whose involvement in political killings wayback in 2018 is being investigated.

“Innuendos spewed against a province already shedding off such a dark image are uncalled for and unbecoming of a co-member of the House also coming from the North,” Rep. Bernos said, while citing that Abra’s peace situation has since tremendously improved.

Bernos, who is also vice-chairman of the House special committee on North Luzon Growth, although joined Eriguel in denouncing the uncovered slay plot as “it has no place in a developing area”, he said, “because violence or threats on the peace affects the investment environment, a much needed push for all of the Northern Luzon area especially now”.
