ADEQUATE WATER SUPPLY, EVEN DURING SUMMER, TARGETED BY NIA

BY: VANESSA BUGTONG

During the 2024 El Niño, the lack of water supply posed a major challenge.

For 2025, the National Irrigation Administration’s budget has been increased to 42.57 billion pesos.

This budget will be used to construct additional dams to address water supply issues for irrigation.

NIA Administrator Eduardo Guillen said the initiative supports the President’s vision of food security.

“This supports our President’s vision of food security and reducing hunger and poverty, especially during El Niño.”

President Marcos emphasized the importance of constructing large dams to store water during the rainy season and supply irrigation during the summer.

The administration also aims to complete three out of five major dam projects before 2028 to enable farmers to plant rice three times a year, even during dry seasons.

NIA also plans to revise the traditional rice planting calendar.

Albino Lagumbay, IA President, Camonga-an Farmer IA, Inc. – Southern Leyte, stated, “The benefits extend beyond our association, reaching the entire community.”

“Because of this, more projects and obligations have been fulfilled, helping more farmers,” said Eduardo Guillen.

PBBM emphasizes, “It empowers our NIA offices, irrigators’ associations, and farmers to ensure better and more productive crops.”

NIA remains committed to improving its irrigation projects to secure sustainable operations and continue existing projects.
