ADHD IS NOT AN INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY

BY: VALERIE ANN DISMAYA

When we talk about education and inclusivity, the topic of intellectual disability often comes up.

It is a condition where a person has limitations in thinking, understanding, and performing daily activities.

However, these conditions vary.

Some may have mild cases, while others require higher levels of support.

But how does someone develop an intellectual disability?

It can be caused by genetic conditions such as Down syndrome or Fragile X syndrome.

It can also result from infections or injuries during pregnancy.

In some cases, malnutrition, exposure to toxins, or lack of essential healthcare needs can contribute to it.

This week marks the celebration of Intellectual Disability Week.

It aims to raise awareness, promote education, and provide support for individuals with such conditions.

In the Philippines, this is part of a broader recognition of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and their rights.

Over the years, more studies and advocacy movements have emerged to help society understand this condition.

However, not all developmental disorders are intellectual disabilities.

For example, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is not considered an intellectual disability.

ADHD affects attention span, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, while intellectual disability impacts cognitive function and learning ability.

Various assessments and interventions, such as Special Education (SPED), therapy, and skills training programs, can help individuals with intellectual disabilities become more independent and engaged in society.
