As Typhoon Nika crosses the mountains of Cordillera, continuous rain has been experienced in Benguet.
The agricultural sector is one of the expected areas to be affected.
Therefore, the Benguet PDRRMO has advised farmers of the possible effects of the typhoon.
“We always advise our farmers that as much as possible, if we can find ways to prevent the damage, like early harvest, then we should do so,” said Abner Lawangen, Chief of Benguet PDRRMO.
Due to the typhoon, Leony, a vendor at a strawberry farm in La Trinidad, Benguet, is experiencing losses today.
“It’s still weak now because there are no tourists,” said Leony Medina, a vendor.
Some farmers hope their crops will not be destroyed.
Others have covered their crops with plastic, but if the rain continues, their crops might flood again.
“Of course, agriculture is a basic concern for the general public,” Lawangen emphasis.
In Barangay Buyacaoan in Buguias, Benguet, some crops have already been flooded due to rising river levels.
Typhoons Kristine and Leon have caused about 290,000 pesos in damages in the province, but this is expected to increase with the onslaught of Typhoon Nika.
Meanwhile, all tourism activities in the province have been canceled.
The La Trinidad PNP is also ready for any effects of the typhoon.
“Our equipment for rescue operations is ready in case there is any need during this typhoon Nika,” PLtCol. Benson Macli-ing, Chief of La Trinidad Municipal Police Station assured.
Benguet PDRRMO has also positioned their equipment for clearing operations due to continuous rainfall.
