AID TO RICE FARMERS DURING THE PLANTING SEASON, ORDERED BY PBBM

BY: ANGELICA ARQUERO

Amid the rains brought by the northeast monsoon and shearline, some farmers have already started planting rice.

However, most farmers, like Dolores from a one-hectare rice field in Laoac, Pangasinan, are still in the harvesting stage.

While they haven’t completed their harvest yet, Dolores hopes to earn enough to cover the expenses for their next planting cycle.

She emphasized the significant costs they incur for farming:

“Fertilizer is not enough, of course. The fertilizer you get is insufficient. It helps, but it’s not enough. Also, the budget is tight. Sometimes, calamities like typhoons or pests cause losses, and we struggle with that,” said Dolores Yanzon, a farmer.

To assist farmers with planting, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. directed the Department of Agriculture to promptly provide the needed resources.

This was discussed during his meeting with economic managers in Malacañang to ensure that planting won’t be delayed as the season starts.

The president added that this support aims to enhance production and income for farmers in the country. He also instructed the Department of Budget and Management to identify planting schedules across different regions.

This aid includes fertilizers, high-quality seeds, and technology to boost rice production.

Additionally, Marcos emphasized that this initiative will help reduce rice prices in the market.

Meanwhile, as a temporary solution to lower rice prices, the DTI and DA agreed to release some National Food Authority stocks to the market.

Also, starting Monday, January 20, a maximum suggested retail price of ₱58 for premium imported rice will be implemented in Metro Manila.
