Filipinos are known for their playful humor and love for pranks.
But did you know there is a day dedicated to tricks and practical jokes worldwide?
April 1 is widely celebrated as April Fools’ Day, a time when people play harmless pranks on friends, family, and even the public.
The most popular theory about its origins dates back to 1582 in France, when the country transitioned from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar, as mandated by Pope Gregory XIII.
Under the old system, New Year’s Day was celebrated on April 1.
However, when the new calendar moved the celebration to January 1, those who were unaware or refused to accept the change were labeled “April Fools” and became targets of pranks.
The tradition spread across Europe, with Britain and Scotland taking it to new heights.
In Scotland, April Fools’ Day was even extended to two days, with practical jokes such as sticking “Kick Me” signs on people’s backs.
With the rise of the internet, April Fools’ Day has become even more popular.
Many companies and media organizations join in by making fake announcements and staged hoaxes.
In the Philippines, social media plays a big role in the spread of April Fools’ Day pranks.
However, while the celebration is fun, it is important to set boundaries.
Experts remind the public to ensure that jokes do not cause harm or offend others.
Harmless pranks that bring laughter without hurting feelings are always the best way to go.
