Baguio and Benguet continue to recover from the impacts of Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon

As the rains subside in Baguio and Benguet, authorities have begun clearing operations, meanwhile, two dams in Benguet continue to release water.

After nearly a week of continuous rains from Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon in Baguio City, the rains have finally lessened today, July 25.

The continuous monitoring of water levels at the Siltation Dam, also known as the City Camp Lagoon, by the barangay officials of Lower Rock Quarry significantly helped alleviate flooding in four barangays in Baguio.

“If we neglect it, ma’am, the trash will accumulate. We need to remove it so that even if the rain gets stronger, the flow of water will be significant, and our siltation will handle it,” says PB. Silvino Cominga Kr., Brgy. Lower Rock Quarry, Baguio City.

(Kung papabayaan po kasi, Ma’am, mag-accumulate mga basura. Kailangan naming tanggalin para kahit lumakas ang ulan, malaki ang flow ng tubig, kakayanin ng siltation natin.)

Clearing operations were also carried out by authorities.

There were no reported injuries or fatalities from the seventeen landslides recorded in the city, but ninety-four families affected by the typhoon were temporarily evacuated.

In Benguet Province, clearing operations have begun on Kennon Road, particularly in Barangay Camp 4.

Residents crossing landslide and rockslide areas continue to exercise extra caution.

It is expected that it will take several more days before the roads are completely cleared due to intermittent rain.

Floodwaters that reached knee-deep in the area have subsided.

Clearing operations have also started for landslides and fallen trees on Halsema Highway, particularly in Atok.

Fallen trees are also being cleared in various parts of La Trinidad, Benguet.

Currently, seventy-four families have been affected by the rains.

More than fifty of them are in evacuation centers.

One fatality was recorded in the province after a vehicle fell into a roughly fifty-meter-deep ravine in Atok, Benguet during heavy rains on Tuesday, July 23.

Ambuklao Dam and Binga Dam continue to release water.

Residents of Barangay Ambuklao in Bokod and the barangays of Dalupirip and Tinongdan in Itogon are being prepared for the possible effects of water release from the two dams.
