A “Happy Walk” event was held in Baguio City to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day, bringing together families and individuals with Down syndrome in a day filled with activities and games.
Among those present was Ferdinand Aguilar, a father who has dedicated 16 years to caring for his child with Down syndrome. Despite the challenges, he takes pride in his child’s progress.
“My proud moments are seeing my child improve, learning to eat and bathe independently,” Aguilar said.
The event was organized by the Persons with Disabilities Affairs Office (PDAO) as part of its mandate to promote inclusivity and uplift the dignity of people with disabilities.
“We join the world in celebrating this day. Through the Happy Walk, we show our support and commitment to raising awareness and improving the lives of persons with disabilities,” said Dr. Samuel Aquino, head of PDAO.
Baguio City’s PDAO was established under Ordinance No. 40, Series of 2015, authored by Councilor Isabelo “Poppo” Cosalan Jr. The office now assists over 9,600 registered persons with disabilities in the city.
Officials continue to push for policy improvements to better serve the needs of the PWD community.
