Candidates vying for the lone congressional seat of Baguio City laid out their platforms and addressed local issues during the Baguio Leaders Forum held on April 21.
The forum was attended by incumbent Councilor Engr. Isabelo “Poppo” Cosalan Jr., former Mayor and Congressman Atty. Mauricio Domogan, Baguio Tourism Council Chair Gladys Vergara, Soledad Go, former Congressman Atty. Nicasio Aliping Jr., Win-Win Demoni, and Atty. Francis Rae Camtugan II.
Each candidate presented their key advocacy areas, from responsive legislation to inclusive leadership.
Cosalan emphasized laws that prioritize the marginalized, while Domogan cited his experience and unfinished projects as reasons for his bid.
Vergara underscored the value of sincerity and integrity in leadership.
Go focused on livelihood improvement, while Aliping called for reclaiming Camp John Hay for the Baguio people.
Demoni vowed to push for mass deployment and support for Baguio residents.
Camtugan addressed land ownership issues affecting locals.
City charter amendments, land distribution, and Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act (IPRA) concerns were also discussed.
The candidates stressed the need for consultation and transparency in handling public land and local governance.
On national issues, they were asked about their stand on the West Philippine Sea, same-sex marriage, the death penalty, and divorce.
Most opposed political dynasties, citing concerns about power monopolies and corruption.
However, candidate Soledad Go expressed support for political succession, saying she believes in continuity if elected officials perform well.
Despite differing views, the candidates maintained professionalism and mutual respect throughout the event.
The forum ended with candidates greeting one another, with many calling it a fulfilling and respectful dialogue that showcased their vision for the city.
