A newly unveiled mural in Barangay Bakakeng Central, Baguio City, illustrates the history of the community, highlighting the origins of its name, which is tied to the livelihood of its early residents.
The mural features images of cows and birds, representing the area’s past as a grazing ground for livestock.
According to local officials, the name “Bakakeng” is derived from the sounds of animals that once thrived in the area.
“This place used to be where cows would drink and birds would chirp, which inspired the name of our barangay,” said Barangay Kagawad Alice Dizon.
The artwork, was officially inaugurated on March 27.
The project was spearheaded by Councilor Leandro B. Yangot Jr., who envisions Baguio City as the mural capital of the Philippines.
“This kind of artwork showcases not only the creativity of the residents but also the city’s rich history and strong sense of community,” Yangot said.
Since 2024, more than 40 murals have been unveiled across Baguio City as part of an initiative to promote art and heritage.
