Farmers in Mankayan, Benguet, are diligently harvesting their cabbages, which will be transported to the trading hub in La Trinidad, Benguet.
With reports of rising prices, these farmers are optimistic about recovering losses from their previous harvests.
“This is good news for us farmers because it will help us recover from past losses,” said Rogemar Daysa, Farmer.
According to the latest monitoring at the Benguet Agri-Pinoy Trading Center, cabbage prices range from 20 to 60 pesos per kilogram, depending on the quality. Compared to prices on November 17, the rates have nearly doubled.
“Well, compared to previous times when prices were below production costs, this is higher. Today, cabbage prices are at 50 to 55 pesos. All these prices are above production costs, so for farmers, this is already high,” said Agusta Balangoy, Spokesperson, League of Associations, La Trinidad Vegetable Trading Areas.
However, according to the League of Associations in La Trinidad, it’s still too early to determine the trend of vegetable prices, as demand is expected to increase with the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations.
“Nevertheless, our farmers have been preparing for decades for the double demand during the holiday season, especially from consumers in Manila,” Balangoy mentioned.
“In terms of supply, it’s moderate because recent typhoons affected our production,” said Daysa.
The prices of vegetables will continue to fluctuate depending on supply and demand in the province.
