Abra congressman JB Bernos expressed grief in the senseless killing of Dr. Amor Trina Dait last September 18 at her home in Pilar, Abra even as the Philippine National Police has tasked the Cordillera Police Regional office – Cordillera to form a task force to fast track investigation of the killing.

In a message, Bernos said that Trina’s killing is one less doctor to help end the Covid-19 pandemic which the province and the whole country has been subject too since March of last year and killed more than a thousand Cordilleran, as of the latest reckoning of the Department of Health – Cordillera.

Bernos, in a message called on authorities to speed up investigations for the swift resolution of the killing.

In his meesage, Bernos wrote: “We join her fellow Abreños in Pilar in calling for the swift delivery of justice on her untimely death. Furthermore, we also call on Abreños who may have the knowledge on the perpetrators of the merciless killing of Dr. Amor Trina Dait to come forward so that these criminals will be punished to the fullest extent of the law.”

He likewise said that the death of the doctor is one less frontline health worker in the battle against the Covid-19 virus.

He said: “Dr. Dait’s untimely death is tantamount to the denial of more immediate and more accessible health services to the people. One less medical frontliner equates to graver circumstances for us in dealing with this pandemic. We should treasure our healthcare workers and give them the respect they deserve as they protect us and our communities from COVID-19.”

He added: “What is more regretful in this senseless killing is that, while she did not express any desire to run for the mayorship or any other elective position, it coincides at a time when the election season is about to begin.”

He said that the killing could be politically motivated as Dait ran for mayor in the last election in her town but lost narrowly.

He wrote: “It seems that our job to keep the reign of peace and order in Abra, most especially with the upcoming election season, is not yet over as we still have to fully eradicate such criminal acts in the Province, which includes capturing Dr. Dait’s murderers.”

A resident doctor of La Paz District Hospital who ran for Pilar mayor in 2019, the 52-year old Dait was shot inside her house in Barangay Poblacion of said town at about 7:30 pm last Saturday.

Dait was shot in the left leg and brought to the Abra Provincial Hospital, where she died.

Police, who later found five slugs from an M-16 rifle at the site, are currently hunting down the suspects.

Meanwhile, PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar tasked PRO-Cor director Police BGen. Ronald Oliver Lee to form a special investigation task group to undertake the investigation and fast track solution of the case with the perpetrators placed behind bars.

“Nagpalabas na ako ng kautusan sa RD, PRO-CAR na bumuo ng isang Special Investigation Task Group upang mapabilis ang imbestigasyon sa kasong ito (I have already made a directive for the regional director of the PRO – CAR to form a Special Investigation Task Group to fast track investigation of this case) in the interest of truth and justice,” PGen Eleazar said in a message posted in the Abra Province Facebook page.

“On behalf of the men and women of the PNP, ipinapaabot ko ang taos-pusong pakikiramay sa medical community at sa pamilya ni Dr. Amor Trina Dait. Tinitiyak ko sa inyo na personal kong tututukan ang kasong ito (I am extending our condolences to the medical community and the family of Dr. Amor Trina Dait. I am assuring you that I will personally give this my utmost attention),” he added.
