A few weeks before the year ends, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has recorded 90 fire incidents in Baguio City.
This includes three consecutive fire incidents last week.
This figure is higher than the 79 recorded in 2023.
According to SFO1 Lloyd Ashley Furigay, Public Information Officer of the BFP – Baguio City, “During the first quarter of this year, we had several reported grassfires and forest fires, which contributed to the increase in fire incidents.”
The BFP also mentioned that the risk of fire increases during the holiday season.
Many people leave their homes to spend the holidays elsewhere.
“When leaving the house, make it a habit to unplug appliances, turn off Christmas lights, and close gas valves. Regularly check your home’s electrical system and avoid overloading extension cords,” Furigay reminded.
This is the concern of 60-year-old Nanay Helen whenever she steps out of the house, even for a short while.
“We always unplug appliances, except for the fridge, since it can’t be turned off,” said ‘Elen,’ a resident.
Purchasing safe, certified Christmas decorations also helps prevent fires.
“Opt for decorations with ICC stickers approved by the DTI,” Furigay mentioned.
According to Ordinance No. 53, series of 2009, all firecrackers are banned in Baguio City.
“Use safer alternatives like horns, pots, or other noise-making items to celebrate instead of firecrackers, which are harmful to the environment and can cause accidents,” Furigay added.
Additionally, for those leaving their homes for vacation, it’s best to entrust their houses to a reliable neighbor or family member for safekeeping.
