BSU to welcome first 50 medical students in 2024

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – A medical student of the blue, white and yellow of the oldest private school in northern Luzon.

But it will be of the yellow and green of the once premiere agricultural school in the same area.

Welcome to Benguet State University which will soon have its own College of Medicine.

BSU president Dr. Felipe Comila said that the school will welcome its first 50 medical students next academic school year in 2024.

The 50 will compose two sections of 25 students each will undergo a four year trainings in the medical field that will culminate in the clerkship at the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center during their fourth year in 2028.

“There will be two sections of 25 students each that will comprise the first class of medical students,” said Comila during an interview Wednesday.

He said the 50 post graduate students will be housed at the College of Nursing and will be under the tutelage of 12 doctor faculties to be led by Dr. Roel Revilla, who will also serve as the new College dean.

He said that the school.has already earmarked PhP45 million to provide the needs of the students including the put up of laboratories in their new home.

BSU will charge a minimal PHP50,000 in tuition and other fees to the new students, way below the average medical fees paid by well known educational institutions like the Saont Louis University in Baguio some five kilometers.

SLU has its own training hospital, the Saint Louis Sacred Heart Hospital which was built as a training ground for its medical students.

SLU medical clerks and interns were also trained at the BGHMC but has since stopped that may now allow the hospital to train new students from BSU.

Students will come from the province’s 13 towns and many of them will have their studies subsidised.

Most incoming medical school freshmen are graduates of pre-med courses like biology or medical technology. On their fourth year, they undergo a year long apprenticeship in an accredited hospital where they are trained in the various fields including surgery, internal medicine, pediatric care and gynecology, among others leading to their graduation.

Another year of internship will allow the new graduates to take the board exam.

A four year residency will allow them to train in tthir chosen specialization. Pigeon Lobien
