CACAO BEANS, CONSIDERED THE “FOOD OF THE GODS” IN ANCIENT MESOAMERICA

Filipinos undoubtedly love chocolate.

Whether as a drink, a dish like champorado, or candies bought from local sari-sari stores, we never let it pass.

When the Spaniards brought cacao beans to the Philippines in the 17th century through the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade, cacao plantations began to flourish.

Did you know that cacao beans were used by the early civilizations of Mesoamerica as currency to pay for goods?

Cacao beans were deeply embedded in the history of the Aztecs and Mayans, as they used them for trade and payments.

In fact, cacao beans were considered more valuable than gold or silver because of their rarity and were believed to be gifts from their god, Quetzalcoatl.

Chocolate was often consumed as a drink called xocolatl, which is the origin of the word “chocolate.”

Many people during that time, including the Aztecs, dedicated their lives to harvesting cacao.

Moreover, cacao had a long shelf life, adding to its significance.

It was also known as the “food of the gods” and symbolized the social status of individuals back then.

Cacao was first planted in the Philippines in 1670.

After centuries, cacao gained more recognition and development in the country.

Today, the Davao region is considered the top producer of cacao, harvesting 1.67 thousand metric tons from April to June 2023.

But did you know that cacao also offers health benefits?

According to the International Cocoa Organization, cacao contains flavonoids, which protect the body’s cells.

It helps lower blood pressure, reduces inflammation, and improves blood flow, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar levels.

Cacao is not just a flavor enhancer; it is also a significant ingredient for maintaining good health.
