CAN CHERRIES HELP YOU SLEEP BETTER?

Cherries are not just delicious fruits but are also packed with nutrients that benefit the body. But where did they originate, and how do they help improve sleep?

Often used as toppings in desserts and drinks, cherries are more than just decorative ingredients. They are among the richest sources of antioxidants, helping to combat oxidative stress and reduce inflammation in the body.

The history of cherries dates back to 500 B.C. They were first discovered in Asia and Europe and became popular for their sweetness and health benefits. Over time, they spread worldwide, thriving in regions with cool and moderate climates.

During the Roman Empire, soldiers brought cherries to different parts of Europe. By the 1600s, they had reached America. Today, cherry cultivation continues across various countries, producing different varieties such as sweet cherries like Bing and Rainier and tart cherries known for their tangy taste, often used in juices and jams.

Apart from their flavor, tart cherries are particularly rich in anthocyanins and quercetin—two antioxidants recognized for their anti-inflammatory and cancer-fighting properties. Studies show that regular consumption of cherries may help reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. They also help maintain heart health, lower blood pressure, and balance blood sugar levels.

Interestingly, cherries contain melatonin, a natural chemical that promotes better sleep. They also have tryptophan, an amino acid that helps the body produce serotonin and melatonin—both essential for regulating sleep patterns.

For those struggling with sleep or frequently staying up late, adding cherries to their diet may be a healthy and natural solution. Experts also highlight their benefits for joint health, especially for individuals with arthritis and gout, as cherries help lower uric acid levels, reducing inflammation and joint pain.

In the Philippines, a local cherry variety called “lubeg” or “malubeg” is also grown, proving that cherries are not only an international delight but also have a place in local agriculture.
