CAN GADGET USE CAUSE BRAIN CANCER?

BY: VALERIE ANN DISMAYA

We live in a world where gadgets are part of our daily lives.

From kids to adults, almost everyone owns a smartphone, tablet, or computer.

But does excessive gadget use really cause brain cancer?

Brain cancer is a serious illness that affects the cells inside the brain.

It can begin in brain tissue or spread from other parts of the body.

Some types, like glioblastoma, are aggressive and considered among the most dangerous worldwide.

This has led many to believe that constant exposure to gadgets can trigger brain cancer, especially due to the radiofrequency radiation they emit.

But according to health experts, there is still no strong evidence directly linking gadget use to brain cancer.

The issue gained attention in the late 1990s and early 2000s when cellphone use began to rise.

In 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a division of the World Health Organization (WHO), classified radiofrequency radiation from phones as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”

This means there might be a risk, but more studies are needed.

In the Philippines, the Department of Health (DOH) and the Philippine Cancer Society continue to monitor studies related to the issue.

For now, there is still no concrete proof that gadgets are a direct cause of brain cancer.

Experts, however, advise using gadgets in moderation.

Even if they don’t cause cancer, excessive gadget use can lead to stress, sleep problems, and a sedentary lifestyle, factors that can worsen existing health conditions.

So, the next time you reach for your phone, maybe give your brain a little break.
