After weeks of speculation and anticipation across the globe, the Catholic Church has elected its new leader, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost.

He will now be known as Pope Leo XIV, becoming the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, and the first American to hold the papacy.

The historic announcement came after two days and three rounds of voting during the papal conclave, following the sede vacante left by the previous pontiff.

As tradition dictates, the moment was marked by the Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti declaring, “Habemus Papam!” or “We have a pope!” to a cheering crowd at St. Peter’s Square.

Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Pope Leo XIV previously served as a member of the Order of St. Augustine, a religious order devoted to education, mission work, and service.

He was appointed bishop in Peru and later served as prefect of the Congregation for Bishops in 2023, one of the highest offices in the Vatican.

In his first words as pope, Leo XIV addressed the world with a simple message: “Peace be with all of you.”

This declaration, received warmly by the faithful, sets the tone for his papacy, emphasizing unity, peace, and renewed faith.

His election is not just a matter of leadership, but of service to millions of Catholics worldwide.

The role of the pope extends beyond the Church, acting as a spiritual guide, moral authority, and global voice in times of challenge and change.

The world now turns its eyes to the Vatican to watch Pope Leo XIV’s first steps as he ushers in a new chapter in the Church’s history.
