Coffee as Art, Women Learn Coffee Painting in Special Workshop

Coffee is not just a morning pick-me-up—it can also be used to create stunning works of art.

This was the lesson taught in a special coffee painting workshop led by artist Angelo Aurelio, as part of the Department of Tourism-Cordillera’s (DOT-CAR) Women’s Month celebration.

Aurelio, a multi-disciplinary artist involved in visual arts, theater, and film, shared that art played a crucial role in his battle against cancer.

“I am a cancer survivor, and art helped me cope with depression and the darkness that comes with such a diagnosis. Doing art is healing; it gives you a reason to move forward and create again,” Aurelio said.

His health condition led him to explore organic and chemical-free materials, which brought him to coffee painting—a technique that uses brewed coffee as paint.

Among the participants was Charity Dannang, a 44-year-old art teacher, who found the free workshop valuable.

“It was a privilege and a great opportunity. Art workshops are usually expensive, and Sir Angelo is a great teacher,” she shared.

Police Corporal Briny Lyn P. Pocdihon from the Baguio City Police Office also found the session refreshing.

“This workshop was a great stress reliever for us police officers, especially with our busy schedules. Painting helps us express ourselves,” she said.

Participants also used vegetables and fruits as brushes to create unique designs.

DOT-CAR Regional Director Jovita Ganongan emphasized the importance of such activities in empowering women through creative expression.

“It’s inspiring to see women take the time to express themselves through art using coffee as a medium. This initiative brings joy and creativity into their lives,” she said.

The agency hopes to expand similar programs beyond Women’s Month, incorporating them into established art festivals like Panagbenga and Ibagiw Festival.

“We have many art-related events, and perhaps we can integrate workshops like this not only during Women’s Month but throughout the year,” Ganongan added.

So, the next time you sip your coffee, remember—it’s not just for drinking, it can also be turned into a masterpiece.
