The night lit up for the residents of Pugo.
They were surprised by a parade of bright, colorful, and oversized lanterns.
These lanterns were made from recycled and indigenous materials, with designs inspired by the vibrant culture of Pugo.
The star of the show was the Pugo bird and the Tinungbo Festival.
“It really feels like Christmas; the lights are so beautiful tonight,” said Buenarosa Catablan, a resident.
But the surprises didn’t end there.
The plaza lit up last night with various decorations.
There was a giant peacock, oversized presents, a nativity scene, and more.
A giant lantern with the message “Save Pugo” also caught everyone’s attention.
To amplify the Christmas spirit, residents were delighted when artificial snow started falling, thanks to a snow machine.
“Of course, I’m happy because this marks the start of Christmas and the Tinungbo Festival in Pugo,” said Judith Rivera, a resident.
According to Mayor Kurt Walter Martin, “These lights serve as a reminder for all of us, guiding us towards progress in our beloved town of Pugo.”
The paraded lanterns were not just for display but were part of a competition among 18 schools that participated in the Lantern Parade.
All smiles and pride were evident among the children showcasing their performances.
“We were surprised when we heard about the lantern competition. At first, we didn’t know what it was, but now that we’ve started, we’re confident that San Luis National High School will be in the top 3,” Luis Baylosis, a participant, mentioned.
“We’re trying to involve more children and constituents here. Let’s continue improving our town without being affected by politics. Let’s keep working together for progress,” Mayor Martin added.
In the end, Tabora Elementary School emerged as the champion in the elementary category.
Their lanterns, inspired by the Tinungbo Festival, were the highlight.
“It was truly unexpected; we didn’t think we would win,” said Maricel Dularte, School Head of the Tabora Elementary School.
Meanwhile, Saitan Integrated School was crowned champion in the high school category.
Their presentation showcased the simple lifestyle in Pugo, La Union.
“We saw the progress of the children, and in the end, we managed to complete our lanterns,” Marie Mangay-an, Teacher I at Saitan Integrated School commended.
This Christmas, the Pugo LGU hopes that beyond the joy, there will be unity among all Pugo residents.
