COMELEC, INVESTIGATES ALLEGED CAMPAIGN VIOLATIONS DURING HOLY WEEK IN BAGUIO CITY

BY: ANGELICA ARQUERO

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in Baguio City is investigating reports of local candidates allegedly campaigning during Holy Week, a clear violation of election rules.

Under COMELEC Resolution No. 10999, campaigning is prohibited on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

However, one city council candidate allegedly conducted house-to-house visits in two barangays during the restricted period.

“There’s a report about a candidate who did house-to-house campaigning. We’ve also received complaints about candidates who posted campaign content on social media during Thursday and Friday,” said Comelec Baguio Election Officer Atty. John Paul Martin.

Martin emphasized that even social media posts can be considered a form of campaigning. “Some posted reels or stories of their activities during campaign periods. If those were posted during the prohibited days, it could be a violation,” he added.

The Comelec has already begun reviewing the complaints, citing complete details provided by concerned citizens. More candidates could face scrutiny for similar violations.

Voters expressed disappointment over the alleged violations, especially given the religious significance of the Holy Week.

“It’s disrespectful to campaign during those days. They’re supposed to be for reflection and remembering the sacrifice of the Lord, not for politics,” said Chester Quedevis, a local resident.

Comelec reminded all candidates and voters to observe campaign rules and maintain respect for the electoral process.

If found guilty, violators could face imprisonment from one to six years, permanent disqualification from holding public office, and loss of voting rights.

“With just days remaining in the campaign period, we must hold violators accountable now to avoid worse offenses later,” Martin warned.
