Communist rebel caught in Kalinga

A communist rebel caught was apprehended at remote Sitio Pococ, Brgy. Apatan, in Pinukpuk town, Kalinga Monday morning, the military claimed.

“Our troops from the 50th Infantry Battalion led by Lt. Col. Melanio Somera together with the operatives of the Kalinga Police Provincial Office served warrants of arrest for murder and attempted murder to Martin ‘Betay’ Gamay,” said Northern Luzon Command (NoLCom) Commander Lt. Gen Ernesto Torres Jr. citing villagers led them to the rebel.

In a statement from Joint Task Group Peace & Justice Commander Brig. Gen. Santiago Enginco, Gamay has been on the government’s watchlist at number 12 in their periodic status report (PSR) “as a member of the communist terror group unit Squad Dos, Kilusang Larangang Gerilya (KLG) Baggas of the Ilocos-Cordillera Regional Party Committee (ICRC).”

Maggay is now under the custody of Pinukpuk town police, who will turn him over to the court.

Maj. Gen. Laurence Mina, Joint Task Force Tala Commander attributes the success of the joint law enforcement operations to their “harmonious working relationship with the PNP backed by the support of the public which is vital to their information-gathering.”
