Our skin is the largest organ of our body.
It serves as a protection or physical barrier for our entire body and other organs. However, it is not exempt from diseases.
During the “ber months,” cold weather is commonly experienced, and various types of skin diseases also appear, such as dry skin, eczema, acne, and other fungal infections.
Since our skin plays an important role in protecting us, we also need to protect it.
This is why in 2001, under Presidential Proclamation No. 110, Series of 2001, signed by former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the second week of November was designated as National Skin Disease Detection and Prevention Week.
Its aim is to remind people of the need for proper skin care, which is often neglected.
In fact, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) data in 2023, about 1.8 billion people suffer from skin diseases worldwide.
In the Philippines, an estimated 4,000 Filipinos have died due to these conditions.
According to dermatologists, some of the most common skin conditions in the Philippines include itchiness or dermatitis, fungal infections, eczema, and acne.
Besides the cold weather, some other reasons for developing skin diseases are allergies, irritation from products used on the skin, and issues with the immune system.
Through this celebration, the Department of Health (DOH) provides free services for the diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases, including the Kilatis Kutis Program and the Leprosy Control Program.
This is important because some skin diseases can become severe and lead to complications if not treated early.
In hospitals and rural health units, free consultations and skin screenings are also provided to aid in the early detection of skin diseases.
One of the goals of these programs is to assist young Filipinos who are often victims of acne, especially during the “ber” months when the weather gets colder.
The celebration of National Skin Disease Detection and Prevention Week is not just for those who have skin diseases but also for those who want to maintain healthy and beautiful skin every day.
So, let’s take care of our skin by eating well, practicing proper hygiene, and consulting only with skin experts.
