DOES DRINKING COFFEE IMPROVE HEART HEALTH?

BY: VALERIE ANN DISMAYA

Starting our mornings with a warm cup of coffee has become a habit for many, whether it’s for students reviewing for exams or as a snack companion at work.

Did you know that drinking two to three cups of coffee daily may actually support heart health?

According to research presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 71st Annual Scientific Session in 2022, regular coffee consumption is associated with a lower risk of heart disease, severe heart rhythm abnormalities, and even longer lifespans.

Despite these findings, many still fear that coffee might harm their hearts, but this study reveals the opposite.

Dr. Peter M. Kistler, the senior author of the study, stated that coffee can be part of a healthy diet for everyone.

However, as with everything, moderation is key. Dr. Kistler recommends limiting coffee consumption to two to three cups daily.

Each cup of coffee contains approximately 94.8 milligrams of caffeine.

Exceeding 400 milligrams of caffeine daily may lead to adverse effects like palpitations, anxiety, and sleep disturbances.

Aside from its wakefulness-promoting benefits, coffee is rich in antioxidants that combat free radicals in our bodies.

It also helps reduce inflammation in various parts of the body, which, if left untreated, could lead to numerous diseases.

Coffee contains magnesium and potassium, essential for maintaining fluid balance in the body and ensuring proper muscle function, including that of the heart.

Some studies also suggest that coffee may help prevent Type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and liver disease.

So, this favorite beverage of many isn’t just an energy booster, it’s a health booster too.
