A 77-year-old man was killed after being repeatedly stabbed by his son-in-law in Barangay Mala Weste, Buguey, Cagayan, at around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 4.
Police said the victim sustained severe wounds to different parts of his body, particularly his neck and arms, which caused his immediate death.
The suspect, a 48-year-old soldier and the victim’s son-in-law, fled after the attack but was later arrested during a hot pursuit operation at his residence.
According to Buguey police chief Police Major Marlou del Castillo, the suspect had gone looking for the victim prior to the incident.
“When he found the victim, they met and that was when he repeatedly attacked him with a bladed weapon,” del Castillo said.
Investigators said the suspect had long harbored resentment toward the victim, allegedly over money that the suspect’s wife, who is working abroad, had been sending to her father.
Police said the suspect was reportedly unemployed and became angry over the financial support being given to the victim.
Authorities also confirmed that the suspect has an existing warrant of arrest for a rape case filed in Tagum City, Davao del Norte in 2018.
The suspect is currently in the custody of the Buguey Municipal Police Station and will face a murder charge.
