The government is intensifying efforts to enhance internet connectivity in Eastern Visayas, particularly in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs).
For 36-year-old pharmacist Jefferson Salazar in Baguio City, internet access plays a crucial role in his daily work.
“We use the internet for interconnecting computers, sending reports via email, and streamlining operations,” he explained.
However, connectivity issues often disrupt their workflow.
“When the internet is slow, our work gets delayed,” he said.
Recognizing these challenges, the government is prioritizing improvements in internet access, especially in remote areas.
During his recent visit to Eastern Visayas, President Marcos emphasized the need to expand reliable internet services in rural regions as part of the administration’s efforts to bridge the digital divide.
Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro confirmed that new systems, including satellite technology, are being implemented to enhance connectivity in GIDAs.
“The government has developed a new system to improve internet access using satellite technology,” Castro said.
Aside from technological advancements, Marcos stressed the importance of infrastructure projects to further strengthen internet connectivity.
“We have identified the system we will use for internet distribution in GIDAs,” he stated.
As part of these initiatives, the government aims to provide stable internet access to more areas in Eastern Visayas that still lack proper connectivity.
