FAMILY, WORK, AND SCHOOL PROBLEMS, PRIMARY CAUSES OF MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES AMONG THE YOUTH

Everyone in the world goes through something.

For Carmela, a 4th-year BS Psychology student, it has been a significant challenge to interact with people facing various issues. That’s why in her field, mental resilience is essential.

Meanwhile, for 51-year-old Nanay Rose, managing the household budget for food is her frequent concern.

With the accumulation of problems in life, stress becomes inevitable for some, which can sometimes lead to depression or anxiety.

While the number of Filipinos experiencing mental health problems increased during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, this number has not decreased among the youth.

According to Department of Health (DOH) data, around 3.6 million Filipinos experience mental health problems.

In the Department of Psychiatry at Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC), most of those seeking help are young people.

Most of them struggle with resolving these problems, lacking coping mechanisms or the ability to express the weight of what they’re going through.

To momentarily forget their worries and release stress, the hospital’s Psychiatry Department organized various games in celebration of World Mental Health Day.

This is also their way of raising awareness about the importance of mental health, with this year’s theme, “Movement: Moving More for Our Mental Health.”
