Fire Prevention Month March 2024: Taking Action for Safety

Following the rapid increase in fire-reported incidents, March 2024 marks the onset of Fire Prevention Month.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Baguio City’s Public Information Officer SF01 Lloyd Ashley Furigay, there were 21 fire-reported incidents from January to February of 2024, a slight decrease from the previous 25 fire-reported incidents from 2023. However, the prevalent causes remain consistent, primarily attributed to neglected ignited objects and the burning of foliage, particularly in grassland areas and forests.

Furigay stated during an interview, “Ngayong January to February, napansin natin ‘tong madami tayong grass fire atsaka forest fire, ‘yun yung napansin nating tumaas. With regards naman sa kung saan yung [sunog], mostly sa mga forest area and mga grassland po natin.”

In addition, with the kickoff of the events for Fire Prevention Month last March 4, the BFP will also be conducting different events and programs for the citizens of Baguio for the whole month.

“Patuloy pa rin naman ang pagconduct ng fire safety seminar at fire drills para maturuan yung mga building establishments and yung mga barangays natin.” Furigay said.

Moreover, the BFP will also be conducting a Fire Squareroad Show in April at SM Baguio, where they will be teaching students and children fire prevention tips, types of firefighting equipment, rappelling, and basic first aid procedures such as CPR.

As Fire Prevention Month takes place, authorities are urging communities to be extra vigilant and participate actively to reduce the risk of fires.
