Today, August 20, we celebrate the birthday of the one and only King of Philippines Cinema, Fernando Poe Jr.
Whether young and old, anyone you ask will surely know the one and only โDa King.โ
None other than Ronald Allan Kelley Poe, better known as Fernando Poe Jr. or FPJ, the King of Philippine Cinema.
Today marks his 85th birthday.
He was born in 1939 in San Carlos, Pangasinan.
At just fourteen years old, he began working as a messenger and stuntman at Everlasting Pictures, a film production company.
At this age, he also landed his first role in the film โAnak ni Palaris.โ
After that, he continued to appear in actions films.
At seventeen, he starred in the film โLo Waist Gangโ released in 1957.
This film was his apparent big break.
In 1961, he launched FPJ Productions.
Throughout his life, FPJ appeared in around three hundred films.
He often played lead roles in famous movies like, Ang Panday, Ang Probinsyano, and Batang Quiapo.
This earned him he title of โHari ng Pelikulang Pilipinoโ or King of Philippine Cinema.
Aside from acting, FPJ also ran for president in 2004.
Although he was nor fortunate enough to win, he continued to help the Filipino people.
In 2004, Daย King passed away.
His death was mourned by millions of Filipinos.
In 2006, then-President Benigno โNoynoyโ Simeon Aquino III signed Proclamation 435 from Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, declaring FPJ as a National Artist form Film due to his contributions to the film industry.
