World Tuna Day was declared by the United Nations in 2016 to raise awareness about the importance of tuna not just as food, but as a key player in biodiversity and global livelihoods.
Here in the Philippines, General Santos City—commonly known as GenSan—has held the title of “Tuna Capital of the Philippines” since the 1980s.
The city thrives on tuna fishing and processing, providing jobs to thousands.
International organizations like the Food and Agriculture Organization have studied tuna species such as yellowfin, bluefin, and albacore to ensure sustainable fishing practices are in place.
So this World Tuna Day, let’s remember: it’s not just about what’s on our plate.
