Giant Strawberry Danish Bread, shared by over 500 people in Baguio City

Yesterday, September 23, 2024, a giant strawberry danish bread was enjoyed by the public in Baguio City as a part of the Foodie Festival Celebration of SM City Baguio.

It’s not even March, but strawberries are already overflowing at a mall in Baguio City.

They came up with a giant strawberry danish bread using butter, chocolate, powdered sugar, and other ingredients.

With butter, chocolate, powdered sugar, and other ingredients, chefs and bakers came up to a giant strawberry danish bread. This was in collaboration with three culinary arts schools, and a well-known bakery in Baguio City.

According to Chef Sandrex Cambi, a Pastry Chef at the French Baker, “Its inspiration came from the local Baguio strawberry product, and then we tried to explore new pastry. Baking is an art and is interesting.”

The combined pieces of strawberry danish bread was approximately 8ft long. However, Chef Lirio, a Culinary Arts student considers this as a great opportunity, “very exciting, very happy. It’s an opportunity that only happens once in a blue moon, so it’s a big opportunity to join this event,” he said.

The giant strawberry danish bread was laid out, and decorated with fruits, then shared among the crowd.

The queue at the mall was a blockbuster with approximately 500 mall goers. From children to adults, everyone was smiling as they took a bite and savored the taste of this pastry.

Bueno, bon appétit, kailyan!

A mall-goer, Jerald Gonzales said that “I’m happy since it’s my first time tasting something for free.”

In addition, “rate of 10, of course, because it’s delicious,” said James Balasta, also a mall-goer.

This event was also part of the celebration of the Foodie Festival which was presented by SM City Baguio and SM Supermalls.

It is an annual mall initiative aiming to support small businesses, farmers, and aspiring entrepreneurs in the food industry.

According to John Philip Baysac, Mall Manager at SM City Baguio, “We chose pastries because we’re from Benguet, and in the Philippines, we’re the only ones who can produce strawberries, so this is the reason why we chose and pursued this event. Also this is to further enhance and educate them. And finally, it will help them to become better chefs in the future.”

The danish bread originated from Austria, which is why it’s also called vienna bread, deriving from the danish word ‘Wienerbrod’ pronounced as ‘vinafault’.
