A grass fire that broke out on April 24 razed approximately 30,000 square meters, or about three hectares, of mountain land in Barangay Nambaran, Tabuk City, Kalinga.
According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Tabuk, the fire started around 4:00 PM.
Due to the mountainous terrain, fire trucks could not reach the area.
Firefighters instead created fire lines to prevent the flames from spreading, said acting fire marshal F/SINP. Arlyn G. Diwag.
The situation was further aggravated by months of dry weather and strong winds, causing the fire to spread rapidly.
“The strong winds last night contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, covering about 30,000 square meters within a short period,” Diwag explained.
Fortunately, no properties were damaged.
Firefighters declared the fire out at around 3:41 AM on April 25.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.
Diwag reminded the public to remain vigilant, especially as summer approaches. “Even a cigarette butt thrown carelessly can cause a fire. We need the community’s help to prevent incidents like this,” she emphasized.
This is the fourth grass fire reported in Tabuk City so far this year.
