At 108 years old, Valentin Untalan of Calasiao, Pangasinan, vividly recalls fighting during World War II.
He is one of thousands of Filipinos who fought for the country’s freedom from Japanese occupation.
Among them is 97-year-old Godofredo, who also fought in the war.
Valentin and Godofredo are among the 25 remaining World War II veterans in Pangasinan.
Eighty years after the war, they hope the youth will value and defend the peace they fought hard to achieve.
On this day, as the 80th anniversary of the Lingayen Gulf Landing is commemorated, the bravery and sacrifices of these veterans were remembered in Pangasinan.
They received financial aid, free medical services, and additional support of 20,000 pesos for centenarians, provided by the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office.
Gov. Ramon V. Guico III expressed, “I urge everyone to continue commemorating this as an important part of Pangasinan and Philippine history for future generations.”
The Lingayen Gulf Landing in January 1945 was key to liberating Luzon from the Japanese Imperial Army.
Though their time may come, the veterans hope their sacrifices for the country will never be forgotten.
