The growing demand for carabao milk continues to pose a challenge for the town of Asingan in Pangasinan, despite steady progress in its local dairy industry over the past two decades.
Asingan began developing its dairy potential in 2005 with the support of the Department of Agrarian Reform and the local government.
A multipurpose cooperative was later established to further strengthen production and provide livelihood opportunities for residents.
Katrina Tango, general manager of the Bantog Samahang Nayon Multipurpose Cooperative, said the group initially struggled to introduce carabao raising to farmers.
“We really started from a low point just to introduce the carabaos,” she said.
For members like Catherine Roxas, the industry has become a vital source of income.
“It is a big help, especially for our children’s education,” she said.
Another member, Virginia Tango, said the cooperative has significantly improved the lives of farming families.
“I saw how difficult life was before for our parents. Now it is stable,” she said.
From just 25 carabaos and a few liters of milk daily, the cooperative now manages more than 100 animals and produces about 200 liters of milk every day.
A processing facility has also been established, capable of producing over 100,000 tetra packs of pasteurized milk during mass production.
Tango said demand for their products continues to rise, especially during trade fairs and government-supported markets.
“Demand is high now, especially from Kadiwa stores, trade fairs, and even some international buyers,” she said.
Despite this, production remains insufficient to meet market needs.
To address the shortage, the local government of Asingan is encouraging farmers in Pangasinan to venture into carabao farming, assuring them of technical and logistical support.
Mayor Carlos Lopez Jr. said raw materials are no longer enough to sustain expansion.
“We are really lacking in raw materials. Once we start supplying nearby towns, what we have will no longer be enough even for our own municipality,” he said.
He added that raising carabaos can provide families with stable alternative income.
The cooperative is also preparing for a partnership with the Department of Education and the Department of Science and Technology to further strengthen production and distribution.
