HONEY SUPPLY FROM BENGUET, AFFECTED AFTER SUCCESSIVE TYPHOONS

Traveling from Isabela province, Saderi endured an 11-hour journey to Benguet State University.

He didn’t want to miss the free beekeeping training offered by the university.

“It’s a hassle because of the traffic, but it’s worth it,” said Saderi Ramel, a participant.

Already owning an apiary, Saderi wanted to expand his knowledge through the three-day training.

“I’m interested in insects, and this is also part of what I teach,” he added.

Another participant, Cus, joined because he saw the opportunity to supplement his income.

“Agriculture is a reliable source of livelihood,” said Cus Kilakil, also a participant.

However, beekeeping has been challenging due to the recent string of typhoons.

According to Dr. Kennet Alip Laruan, President of Benguet State University (BSU), “It’s hard for them to produce because many resources, especially sunflowers, were damaged. These are the main sources of nectar.”

Due to these challenges, the university fears it may not reach its PHP 100,000 honey production target this year.

“It’s tough. Even if we combine honey production from Baguio and Benguet, it’s still insufficient to meet the demand,” Laruan added.

As part of their efforts to expand the apiary sector, the university conducts training sessions twice a month for those interested in honeybee farming.
