HONORING THE MODERN-DAY HEROES

BY: VALERIE ANN DISMAYA

When we think of heroes, we often picture those who sacrificed their lives for peace and freedom.

But when the COVID-19 pandemic struck the world in 2020, a new group of unsung heroes emerged—health workers who risked their own lives to save others.

The pandemic was an invisible battle, yet frontliners faced it with unwavering courage.

Doctors, nurses, medical technologists, midwives, and other healthcare professionals tirelessly served the public despite the dangers.

In recognition of their sacrifices, the first week of April is celebrated as World Health Worker Week.

This global observance was first established in 2013 by the Frontline Health Workers Coalition in collaboration with the World Health Organization.

Its goal is to acknowledge the crucial role of healthcare workers and raise awareness of their needs.

Beyond appreciation, the celebration also advocates for better working conditions and stronger support systems for medical professionals.

In many countries, including the Philippines, health workers often struggle with low wages, inadequate benefits, and a lack of essential equipment.

According to research by UNESCO and WHO, many experience burnout, stress, and physical exhaustion due to the demands of their profession.

To address these challenges, the Philippine government continues to implement measures such as Republic Act No. 11712, also known as the Healthcare Workers Benefits and Allowances Act, which aims to provide additional support for those in the field.

Every year during World Health Worker Week, various organizations worldwide hold awareness campaigns, health forums, and recognition programs to honor these dedicated professionals.

As we mark this occasion, we extend our deepest gratitude and respect to our health workers—our modern-day heroes.
