One of the most famous festivals in Luzon is the Panagbenga Flower Festival.
“Panagbenga” is a Kankanaey word that means “season of blooming” or “season of growth.”
It truly reflects the theme of the festival as it celebrates the beauty and freshness of flowers blooming in the cool breeze and fertile soil of Baguio City.
But when and how did it start?
The Panagbenga Festival was first held in February 1996.
Though it is relatively new compared to other traditional festivals in the Philippines, it has become a significant cultural representation of the city.
It started as an initiative to help Baguio recover from the tragedy and damage caused by the 1990s Luzon Killer Earthquake.
The establishment of this celebration was led by Atty. Damaso Bangaot Jr., a former official of the Baguio Flowers Festival Foundation, Inc. (BFFFI).
Thus, Panagbenga is not just for enjoyment, but also to revive the city’s economy and showcase the resilience and capability of the people of Baguio to rise again.
Moreover, it aims to highlight the rich culture and natural beauty of Baguio to the entire Philippines and the world.
This annual celebration is made possible through collective collaboration of the local government, private organizations, schools, and ordinary citizens.
The streets of Baguio are filled with flower decorations.
Included in the celebration are street dance competitions where youth and group members dance to traditional music and, of course, the Panagbenga Hymn.
The grand floral floats also parade through the streets, overflowing with flowers.
And of course, there’s the Market Encounter, showcasing various local products such as clothing, accessories, and food.
Another much-awaited event is the closure of Session Road for one week to give way to Session in Bloom.
Panagbenga is not just a festival for the eyes or for enjoying music.
It is a celebration embedded with the hearts and culture of everyone.
It is proof that no matter the challenges of time, Baguio City and its residents can rise again, more colorful and stronger than before.
