HOW TO KEEP YOUR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM HEALTHY?

BY: VALERIE ANN DISMAYA

With the summer season in full swing, fiestas, outings, and gatherings are everywhere. It’s hard to resist delicious food, but overeating, eating too fast, or having an unhealthy diet can cause digestive issues like acid reflux and constipation. In severe cases, it may even lead to ulcers or irritable bowel syndrome.

To raise awareness, the Philippines celebrates Digestive Health Week every second week of March. The Philippine Society of Gastroenterology launched this annual observance to highlight the importance of maintaining a healthy gut and digestive system.

But what causes digestive disorders? These issues can result from poor diet, stress, infections, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, or dehydration.

To prevent such problems, experts in gastroenterology offer free consultations and health programs. The event also promotes balanced diets, regular exercise, stress management, and proper hydration to keep the stomach and intestines healthy.

The Department of Health is also conducting studies on gastric cancer, hepatitis, and other serious digestive conditions to develop better treatments. Medical missions, online forums, and awareness campaigns are part of the ongoing efforts to educate the public.

So the next time you eat too much, remember the importance of taking care of your digestive health. Eat and drink responsibly!
