It is the day for young Ifugao prospect, one of the country’s top young guns, Carl Jammes “Wonderboy” Martin as he goes for the Philippine super bantamweight title 11 months after moving up the weight.
Martin takes on the defending champion Mark Anthony Geraldo Saturday, December 4, at the Elorde Sports Complex in Parañaque City.
Both fighters made 122 pounds during their weigh in Friday where Martin exclaimed on his Facebook page: “Sa wakas makakain na (Finally I can eat).”
Martin will be the fourth fighter Geraldo will be defending the belt he won from Virgel Vitor who he beat via knockout in February 2019.
The 22-year old Martin has made a name for himself, a knockout artist who has floored 15 of his 17 opponents in the past.
Martin hopes to be the champion but it will be a tall task against the dangerous Geraldo who decided International Boxing Federation flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas way back in March 2012.
Geraldo, 38-9-3 will surely use experience in the fight against the Ifugao wunderkind. But the Hingyon native is unfazed on the impressive record of his older opponent.
“He is the toughest opponent I have yet to face. While he hungers for Geraldo’s belt, he wants to face an opponent of that quality.
Martin has been approached by many to take on quality foreign opponents or start fighting abroad.
Martin said that they are being cautious and wants to have the best deal before they agree.
Among those reported to have an interest in handling the boxing Martin’s boxing career include Fil-American Morris East, who has links with promotions like Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank, Inc., Richard Schaeffer’s Probellum, Sean Gibbons of MP Promotions and Zamboanga Valientes owner Junie Navarro.
Saturday’s Ultimate Knockout Challenge will be headlined by Charley Suarez facing Delmar Pellio. With the Martin – Geraldo co-main event is the face off of Michael Dasmarinas and Ernesto Suallong.
Nine undercards are also slated in the event presented by VSP Promotions in cooperation with Elorde Promotions and VSP Boxing.
