Knowledge of First Aid, Taught to the Youth

Twenty junior first aiders are now prepared to respond to disasters after undergoing basic first aid training provided by the Red Cross and SM City Baguio as this is particularly important as the Philippines is the most disaster-prone country in the world.

Despite being young, they can save lives too.

That’s what these cute certified junior first aiders have proven.

This is from the First Aid Basic Training brought by the Red Cross Baguio City Chapter and SM City Baguio.

Among the participants were Yurie and her father, Kenneth.

According to them, it’s best to have knowledge in this area because disasters can strike at any time.

According to Kenneth Khayog, a parent, “We’ve witnessed many emergencies where people didn’t know what to do… and we were part of that.”

(Madami na tayong nawitness na emergencies wherein hindi alam yung ginagawa…kasama na kami roon.)

“I learned something. Bandaging,” Yurie, a Junior First Aider, added.

(May natutunan ako. Bandaging.)

The activity also aims to increase public awareness about disasters, whether young or old.

This is crucial, especially since the Philippines topped the World Risk Report 2023 as the country with the highest disaster risk worldwide.

According to the Red Cross, it is also important for families to have knowledge of first aid.

“By the mere fact that alone is a very, very big help… this is why we conduct this junior first aid,” says Gwendoline Buenavista, Instructor, Red Cross Baguio City Chapter.

“This is for our kids, for our junior first aider program,” added John Philip Baysac, Mall Manager, SM City Baguio.

(Ito po ay para sa ating mga kids, for our junior first aider program.)

Each child has their own first aid kit, and they were taught triangular bandaging for different parts of the body.

They were also taught who to call in case of an emergency.

According to Marki Cabay, Safety Services Instructor, Red Cross Baguio City Chapter, “We need to teach them because sooner or later, they can use it for their classmates… and they also have their own kit.”

(Kailangan po natin na turuan sila kasi sooner or later magamit nila sa mga kaklase nila…atsaka meron din naman silang kit.)

With simple knowledge, they can save lives and inspire others.
