A landslide struck the mountainous area of Sitio Camp 3, Acupan in Barangay Virac, Itogon, Benguet early morning on July 4, following several days of heavy rainfall caused by a low-pressure area (LPA).
Residents were once again filled with fear as mud and boulders cascaded down from the mountainside, damaging structures and cutting off access.
This was not the first time a landslide hit the area. A similar incident occurred last year at the height of Typhoon Nika.
“Because of the continuous rains, the ground softened again,” said Engr. Cyril Batcagan, chief of the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (LDRRMO) in Virac. “That’s likely why it gave way.”
One of the major impacts of the landslide was the destruction of the hanging bridge used by residents as their main access to and from their homes.
Standing on the affected site, reporter Vanessa Bugtong noted, “Behind me is what’s left of the hanging bridge in Sitio Camp 3, Acupan. What used to be a vital pathway for locals is now impassable due to the mudslide and falling debris. While clearing operations are ongoing, access and safety remain major concerns especially during heavy rains.”
Parts of the sitio were temporarily isolated following the landslide.
“We’ve evacuated some residents already. Several families have been affected,” said Punong Barangay Nestor Martillano.
However, not everyone was willing to leave.
“I’m honestly worried, but I don’t want to leave my home,” said Joshua Medez, a resident. “This is all we have.”
Engr. Batcagan said preemptive evacuations had been advised before the rainfall intensified.
At present, affected families are staying with relatives while local authorities continue to monitor the area for possible additional landslides.
“We urge residents to stay alert and evacuate immediately if necessary,” Batcagan added. “With the rains expected to continue, the risk of more landslides remains.”
