In a 2022 World Bank study, it was revealed that 9 out of 10 Filipino children cannot read and comprehend at a level appropriate for a 10-year-old.
This education crisis has been felt since 2018.
According to the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).
Only 1 out of 5 Filipinos have proficiency in reading and mathematical literacy.
This worries parents like Catherine, as she believes this may be a result of the pandemic.
According to Catherine Lando, a parent, “They’re still children; they forget things. That’s why it’s good to give them a quick review so they won’t completely forget.”
Due to the significant learning gap observed among Filipino students, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed the Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning or ARAL Program Act.
“It is imperative that we prioritize learning interventions,” said PBBM.
Under ARAL, the goal is to provide free and targeted academic support in reading, math, and science for students from kindergarten to Grade 10.
These students will undergo structured tutorials, one-on-one guidance, and personalized learning.
“By honing their essential competencies, we can equip our students with critical problem-solving skills, which are essential to the progress of our nation in this modern world,” PBBM added.
In this way, more focus will be given to enhancing the knowledge of Filipino students in 21st-century skills, which is a key to the country’s success.
